Overview
The International Graduate Program in Comparative Modernization (GCM) resides within the School of Marxism（also named as School of Social Science Education）in East China Normal University. The School of Marxism in ECNU has built strong academic traditions and has accumulated invaluable expertise and experiences. Renowned for her excellence and leading role in social science research and education, the School of Marxism has achieved A class in the fourth round of national discipline assessment. Many of her graduates have become senior scholars and practical leaders. Most of the faculty has been awarded National Science Fund, has undertaken state-level and/or provincial-level academic projects, has published numerous academic books, monographs and journal articles, and has won various research prizes. In 2015, the International Communication Center for the Achievements of Marxism’s Sinicization was established, which is made up of a number of leading experts in their fields, including philosophy, history, politics, economy, law and education.
GCM offers overseas students the opportunity to study modernization and related social science while living in China’s largest city, Shanghai. GCM recruits students from all over the world, fostering a unique, multidisciplinary and multinational environment in which students from diverse background would enhance rigorous academic study. GCM provides a series of courses for foreign students to study the concept and practice of modern transformation under global vision. GCM will particularly lead overseas students to better understand the ideas of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the great achievements of reform and opening-up. It is dedicated to the transmission of Chinese voice, to establish the Chinese discourse, to display the achievements of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and cultivate international forces conducive to China's development.
Teaching staff of GCM has multidisciplinary background, covering political science, philosophy, history, economics, law and other disciplines. Most of the prospective instructors have more than one year of overseas study or work experience. They have built a solid professional foundation and a broad international perspective, and can communicate with foreign students smoothly and offer all-English courses. More than 10 teachers of the School have joined the Program, including Gu Hongliang, Gong Yongmei, Xu Ruifang, Yao Xiaona, Chen Rong, Ye fangxing, Xu feng, Hong Yanni, He Songxu and so on. In addition to the full-time teachers listed in the form, GCM will also invite distinguished professors at home and abroad to participate in the Program, and some have agreed to offer courses or host special lectures.

Degree & Condition for Application
The candidates for Master Degree are required to meet the requirements for Chinese Language, academic credits for course study (at least 24 credits) and dissertation (at least 30 thousand words in English ). The candidates for PhD Degree are required to meet the requirements for Chinese Language, academic credits for course study and dissertation(at least 120 thousand words in English ). For international students in non-Chinese language taught programs, they MUST pass HSK-3 (≥180) or pass the International Chinese Proficiency Standard Test arranged by the university before graduation. Upon completion of the program, graduates will earn a Master Degree or Doctor Degree as recognized by the Education Ministry of People’s Republic of China.
Language For the Program
The candidate are required to learn Chinese at least for 2 semesters. The language for instruction and dissertation in GCM is English.
Schooling period
3-5 year Master & 4-6 Year PhD
The three-year master program provides a comprehensive introduction to the ideology, movement and reform of modernization, and also discusses the history, economy, politics, law, society, and foreign policy related with modernization in global sphere. In the second year, the students should conduct research on a topic of their own choice. The 4-6 Year PhD program provides deeper research based on the study for master degree. The students are required to publish academic papers besides course study which will mostly be finished in the 1st year.

* GCM is supposed to invite speakers with different expertise to give students independent lectures. The lectures would cover a broad variety of topics and the exact lecture topics would depend on availability (and travel schedules) of invited speakers, as well as availability and access to institutions and sights.
